Although teaching is often challenging, it is certainly also extremely rewarding. In the language classroom, I find that students gain an appreciation for new cultures, new people and new ways of thinking about the world, all the while gaining a better appreciation for themselves.
As part of my teaching background, I have also conducted online teaching in Dutch using the Adobe Connect format. Using a video format, though sometimes frustrating when technically problems arise, allows one to simulate the language classroom in an exciting new way. In this way, one can simulate virtually all activities of a conventional classroom in the digital setting. Thus, one can write information onto a white board behind you, embed powerpoint slides or listening exercises within the virtual classroom, have students type their answers to various questions as well as having students respond aloud. Another incredibly valuable teaching experience I have been able to participate in is the experience of teaching in situ within the language setting. I have found that such an experience challenges students (both linguistically and culturally) in a new and thought-provoking manner. For instance, American students are often surprised that water is not free in restaurants in German-speaking countries or that German tipping practices are slightly different than American tipping practices. At Denison University, I have also developed some of my own courses including a class entitled Sports and Popular Culture in German-speaking Europe, which has proven to be a very popular way to introduce themes of modern German culture into the classroom. |
